October 2010 - Helping Hand Grant Recipients

Single working mother was out of work for one month and hospitalized some of the time because of a documented illness. After using sick time and vacation time she still could not make a rent payment. We paid one month’s rent.

Single working mother had been laid off. Struggling to make ends meet she decided to move to more affordable housing once she found a job but could not afford the security deposit. We helped with the security deposit.

Married man on a fixed income because of a disability moved to another state. In doing so his SSI payments and Medicare were interrupted and deductions got messed up. Social Security garnished his check for one month to catch up and as a result he did not have enough money for rent. We paid one month’s rent.

Married couple with children, she receives SSI and he works full time but need both incomes to make ends meet. She was ill and required hospitalization and as a result he had to take time off from work to care for children and did not get paid. They needed help with an electric bill. We paid the electric bill.

Married woman and mother who experienced a serious accident and temporarily lost the household’s second income. Needed help with a car payment and one month of medical insurance. We helped with both.

Retired woman was sharing all expenses with a roommate who left unexpectedly. Caught off guard she had already helped a relative with a car repair and paid her own school expenses and was left without any extra to pay the roommates half of the bills for the month. We helped with the rent.
August 2010 - Helping Hand Grant Recipients

Single working woman missed two months of work due to surgery. Once paid medical leave and vacation days were used she could not pay her rent. We helped with her rent payment.

Single working mother experienced 3 significant crises within a 2 month time frame. Needing time off from work to tend to these crises made it difficult to have enough money to pay her rent. We helped with a rent payment.

Single divorced working Mom with 2 children had to pay an emergency car repair bill so she could get back and forth to work and as a result did not have enough to complete her mortgage payment. We helped her make her mortgage payment.

Single divorced Mom with an adult disabled child recently laid off but almost finished with a career change certification class. With her new job not starting for another 2 weeks she was unable to meet her rent payment for one month. We paid one month’s rent.

Having spent her savings to buy a vehicle to transport them she needed help with a deposit for a new apartment. We helped with the initial deposit so she could move into a place of her own.

Senior citizen on a fixed income cannot get around without a walker or using a wheelchair. She needed help with a ramp repair as the existing one was unstable and unsafe. Working in co-ordination with Geauga County Department on Aging we paid for the supplies and they provided the labor.

Single mother on a fixed income with a child diagnosed with a rare disease. Needed assistance with the cost of hotel rooms while traveling to and from an out of state medical conference where her child was going to be examined by medical experts for free. We assisted with the cost hotel rooms for her and her child.t.

Applicant on a fixed income with a working spouse was in need of a costly text to speech device due to surgery which left him unable to speak. Coupled with all of the medical expenses surrounding his illness and surgery he was unable to afford this device on his own. No other organization would provide him financial assistance. We purchased the text to speech device for him.
May 2010 - Helping Hand Grant Recipients

Single working women, lost her job and out of work for 2 months. Now working 2 jobs to make ends meet. Needed help with one and a half month's rent to prevent eviction. We helped with her rent payment.

Single, disabled, retired man on a fixed income needed help financing a much needed ramp for his home to accommodate mobility using his wheelchair. We assisted with the financing along with the department on aging.
April 2010 - Helping Hand Grant Recipients

Disabled gentleman on a fixed income who just got out of the hospital needed financial help for a repair on his handicapped van. This van will provide him with transportation to look for work to supplement his fixed income and return to school. We assisted with the finances for the car repair.

Single working Mom, newly divorced, no longer able to meet the expenses of her present housing was unable to save both first month rent and deposit for a more affordable apartment. We helped her with the deposit.

Single working Mom with 2 children who needed to remove herself from an abusive situation but did not have money for deposit and first month's rent. We paid her first month's rent.

A newly divorced single woman who is on a fixed income because of a permanent disability is awaiting the sale of her house in order to have money to meet extra expenses. She was unable to pay for an emergency car repair. We paid for the car repair.

Recent widow on fixed income struggling to pay high electric bill resulting from husband being on continual oxygen machine for several months. We paid her electric bill to avoid shut off.
